I have a South Bend 10k lathe manufactured in 64. I would like to change the flat belt system out to a V belt. The lathe came both ways. I have had problems making roughing cuts and the belt .

The best mod you can make on the 9" south bend is to pull the spindle an add a serpentine belt to replace the leather belt. I would agree that the machine is under powered and is not the the most ridgid, however alot and I mean alot can be made on these machines. I learned to run a South Bend 9" about 28 years ago in trade school.
